Wedding venues in Sigtuna

Sigtuna is one of Sweden’s oldest towns and a beautiful destination for couples looking for a wedding venue close to Stockholm.

Its location between Stockholm and Uppsala, and its proximity to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, also makes Sigtuna particularly convenient if you have guests travelling from different parts of Sweden or from abroad.

There are plenty of options for both religious and civil wedding ceremonies. In the centre of Sigtuna you will find the medieval St Mary’s Church, the tiny Sigtuna Town Hall and several historic church ruins. Combined with the cobbled streets, Lake Mälaren and the surrounding countryside, there are also plenty of beautiful locations for wedding photography.

As a wedding photographer, I have photographed weddings at several venues around Sigtuna and know many of these locations well. Here are five wedding venues worth considering for your wedding in Sigtuna.

Wenngarn Castle

Wenngarn Castle is a beautiful option for couples who love the idea of celebrating their wedding in a historic Swedish castle.

One of the things that makes Wenngarn particularly interesting is the variety of settings available within the estate. The castle itself provides an elegant backdrop, while the surrounding gardens offer completely different possibilities for an outdoor ceremony and wedding portraits.

The castle also has one of Europe’s best-preserved castle chapels, providing an atmospheric option for couples who would prefer an indoor ceremony. If you are planning a wedding during late spring or early summer, the apple orchard is another lovely setting when the trees are in bloom.

For me as a photographer, Wenngarn offers plenty of variety without requiring the couple to spend a large part of their wedding day travelling between different locations.

SIGTUNASTIFTELSEN HOTEL & CONFERENCE

Sigtunastiftelsen is one of the most distinctive wedding venues in Sigtuna. Its architecture and courtyards almost feel more Mediterranean than Swedish, which gives the venue a completely different character from many of the castles and manor houses in the area.

There are several beautiful options for a wedding ceremony here.

The Olaus Petri Chapel is located beside Rosengården and has white walls, beautiful natural light, red brick floors and dark wooden benches.

Rosengården itself is surrounded by covered walkways and centred around a fountain, creating a wonderful setting for a civil ceremony, drinks reception or wedding portraits.

There is also an open-air church for couples dreaming of an outdoor wedding ceremony.

One of the things I particularly like about photographing weddings at Sigtunastiftelsen is the architecture. There are so many interesting backgrounds and pockets of light that we can create very different photographs without ever having to leave the venue.

Wedding dinner and accommodation are also available on site, making it possible to keep much of the wedding celebration in one place.

Rosersberg Palace

Rosersberg Palace is one of Sweden’s ten royal palaces and is beautifully situated beside Lake Mälaren, close to both Sigtuna and Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

The combination of the palace, park and waterfront makes this an especially versatile location for a wedding. Depending on your plans, there are possibilities for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies, while the grounds provide plenty of options for wedding portraits.

I particularly like photographing weddings here because the surroundings change throughout the day. The palace creates a grand, classical backdrop, while the park and water allow us to create softer and more natural portraits only a short walk away.

Accommodation is available on the estate, which can also make the logistics easier when guests are travelling to the wedding from further away.

Sigtunahöjden

Sigtunahöjden is another option for couples planning a wedding in Sigtuna, particularly if having accommodation and the celebration in the same place is important.

The large veranda overlooks the surrounding landscape and Lake Mälaren and can provide a beautiful setting for an outdoor ceremony. Having an indoor alternative nearby is also useful when planning a Swedish wedding, where the weather does not always cooperate.

The Orangery can be used for the wedding reception and evening celebrations, allowing the different parts of the day to take place within the same venue.

Keeping the ceremony, reception and accommodation close together can make a big difference to the flow of a wedding day. There is less time spent transporting guests between locations and more time available for actually enjoying the celebration.

For couples who want their wedding to feel connected to Sigtuna itself, the location is particularly appealing. The historic streets, waterfront and surrounding architecture are all within walking distance and provide plenty of opportunities for wedding portraits.

The hotel is also close to St Mary’s Church, making it a convenient option if you are planning a church ceremony followed by dinner and celebrations at the hotel.

For me as a wedding photographer, being able to walk between the hotel, the town and the waterfront gives us plenty of photographic variety without taking the couple away from their guests for a long portrait session.

Which wedding venue in Sigtuna should you choose?

The best wedding venue will depend on the kind of celebration you are planning.

If you are dreaming of a castle wedding, Wenngarn Castle and Rosersberg Palace both offer beautiful historic settings. Sigtunastiftelsen has a completely different architectural character, while Sigtuna Stadshotell puts you right in the heart of the historic town. Sigtunahöjden is worth considering if having accommodation and the celebration together is particularly important.
